Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga

What can be more romantic than riding a Camel into the desert sunset. Yet just how do you choose whether to adventure at Chebbi or Chigaga? One is more popular and has higher dunes, whilst the other is harder to reach but equally fabulous.

Well, never fear. we are here to help. Although we do have a clear favourite, it really does depend on your own personal criteria for what a successful desert adventure would involve for you.

Erg Chebbi

The better known of the two dune areas is Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga. Around 8 hour drive from Fes in the north, and also from Marrakech in the west. The bivouac scene is better established and sees more visitors than Erg Chigaga, mainly due to the easier access and superior dune size.

Erg Chigaga

Erg Chigaga is a much more recent tourist destination, and as such has only been admitting visitors since the 1990s. It lays south of M’Hamid, about a 9 hour drive from Marrakech. It’s a good idea to break the journey half way around Ait benhaddou, The last leg of the journey south of Ouarzazate through the Draa Valley is indeed a destination in itself.

So the former is famous for it’s high dunes, some of which can reach 160m, thus affording spectacular views across this breakaway piece of Sahara. the latter on the other hand has fairly low dunes in comparison, only reaching around 120m, but must take the lead for vastness as it appears to go on forever, giving a real sense of being out in the wilderness. To just reach the dunes here involves around a 60km off road journey from M’Hamid,The off road route follows the Algerian border, passing the vast dried up Lake Iriki (where there used to be crocodiles and Ostriches!) before rejoining the sealed road a few hours on at Foum Zguid. This route is part of the original Paris – Dakar rally route, and experiences some incredible rocky desert scenery.

Come and explore with us a lot of facts about these two magnificent places.

The Adeventure of Sahara 7 Days

Itinerary programe:

1st day  :  Marrakech to Tamnougalt via Ait Ben haddou

Prepare for some of the most epic scenery as we cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Alpine-esque fields of grazing sheep clash with unforgiving rocky terrain, mud-brick houses, plus a visit to World Heritage listed Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. Tonight in a wonderful Kasbah.

2nd day : Tamnougalt to Sahara(Erg Chigaga) via Zagora

Leaving snowcapped mountains to go boarding on a sand dune sounds impossible, but it’s happening. Blast across sand , wind between desert dunes and rattle your bones over the dry Draa River to reach our camp on the edge of the Erg Chigaga dunes.Play with  sand-Board till sand fills all your clothes, then feast on tagine around the fire. This is a desert style.

3rd day : Sahara to Taliwin

Lake Iriki is the bane of desert survival, unless you're a Berber. Its mirages can fool you into thinking this is the coast and it's time for a cocktail. Shack up for the night in Taliwin town as a local Berber family welcome you into their home with tea with Saffron(goldplant).

4th day : Taliwin to Taroudant

As far as road trips go, crossing the otherworldly volcanic landscape of the Jebel Siroua Mountains by 4x4 bats well above average. Expect endless twists through rock-strewn desert vistas, climbing to an elevation of 2500m with a window-slideshow of deep valleys, barley and saffron fields. Keep watch for blink-and-you’ll-miss-it villages where the Ait Ouaouzguit Berbers herd donkeys and cut weave a rug like no other. Night in a nice Kasbah.

5th day : Taroudant to Essaouira via Agadir city

In the Argan Forest there are goats that live in trees. How awesome is that! Spend some time staring at them, then we’re off to the beach!

6th day : Essaouira

Hold onto your hat! This charming fishing town which is a good place for windsurfers thanks to its howling coastal wind. Wander the medina or hit the beach between market shopping. Pro tip: dine at the open-air fish stands for some essence of Essaouira tonight.

7th day : Essaouira to Marrakeh

we head back to the Red City and a chance to meander the medina in Marrakech. ‘Our last night in Morocco’ sounds like a cheesy romance novel, but it’s true.
